I wish to secure a canoe (18Kg) to the garage ceiling using metal hooks that screw into the wood joists that hold up the floor above.

I intend to use 2 hooks with a screw thread of 8mm diameter, 30mm length.

Does anyone know the breaking strain of a hook like this if screwed into a sound wooden beam? (I assume the weak point is the join, not the metal of the hook)

Suppose that experience has shown that only one-third of all patients having a particular disease will recover if given the standard treatment. A new drug is to be tested on a group of 12 volunteers. It is believed that the new drug will increase the individual recovery rate to one-half. If health regulations require that at least 7 of the 12 patients should recover before the new drug can be licensed, what is the probability the new drug will be discredited even with the expected increase in recovery rate?
