I bought a 2nd hand car from a friend. He gave me the registration book and keys. I gave him £1,800.00 (well under value) this was done in front of witnesses. There was no receipt nor did he sign the registration. This is because I agreed that he will give me back my money by July 08 and I will give him back his car, again this was said in front of witnesses. Unfortunately my friend died. Now his family want back the car which I have so they can put it through probate and then for me to get back my money that way. I keep explaining to them I did not loan my friend the money I bought the car fairly and just agreed that he would buy it back in July if not I would sell it myself and make a big profit. I have agreed to keep to the same arrangement, with the family but they want the car back. How do I stand? I have the keys and registration book, and I did on a few occasions allow him to use the car and give it straight back to me. I would be grateful for any advice.

My student railcard was wrongly confiscated by ticket officers at a train station claiming it was forged. After receiving a letter from my bank (they are the ones who produce the cards) proving that it was in-fact fine, I returned to the ticket office to claim some compensation (my railcard guarantees me to 20% discount on all rail journeys). I am owed over £150 but the ticket office is refusing to pay. What can I do?

I purchased online business cards from Vista Print, I didn't click or sign up to a subscription of 9.95 a month for which I have received nothing in return. I contacted VP Rewards and cancelled my subscription and requested a refund, this has not been honoured, after some research and informing my credit card provider of this SCAM I find I am amongst thousands of people experiencing the same. My credit card provider is not very helpful insisting they are obliged to pay a subscription whether I cancel my card or not. I am frustrated that this scam can continue to defraud me of my hard earned cash..what can I do legally to stop this?

I live in a 9th floor flat which recently had a flood - that is all sorted but some water entered the flat below and made areas of the tenants carpets wet - my flat obviously sustained the worst damage but my carpets are now fine - the tenant downstairs is demanding my insurance info or is threatening to take me to court - am I right in thinking that he can't claim against my contents insurance - or does he claim against my landlady's building insurance - the flood was caused by Thames water turning off the water at 7.00am and a tap being left on for about 3/4 hour after the supply was returned. In my opinion the tenant is trying it on to get his flat re-carpted as his damage was minimal and if my carpets are OK I am sure that his are even though he is insisting that they are ruined - would appreciate any advice - regards Debbie

Northern Rock are taking me to court to get a charging order on my property. The debt is in my name but the property is in joint names, I have sent a letter back to court stating why I object, plus the debt is for 24000 and my share of the equity is only 10000. How likely are they to get the charging order?

Due to Royal mail staff's professional negligence, I've lost my passport.

The HomeOffice sent my passport in January by Signed for delivery. they returned my passport to HomeOffice stated the reason as I don't live in the address that HomeOffice tried to send to without my consent. I made a complain to Royal mail and told them I still live in the address.

After my complaint, the HomeOffice sent my passport second time to the same address and this time Royal mail lost my passport and some very important documents.

Royal mail only agree to refund me £42 and will not try to find the documents.

I have prove of rejecting delivery of my mails.

My question is: I really want to get my passport back. Even for me to get a new one it'll cost more than £42, not mention the original documents I would not be able to get a second copy. Do I have a chance to make a claim against Royal mail?

Many thanks for reading this!

A garage that has featured on watchdog (Heathrow autos) has my jeep. I paid them £1500 to replace my engine with a refitted one. They have had it since Oct 2006. They said it would take 2 weeks. Since then they have told me that parts were missing and that I need to replace them. After replacing each part they wanted they would then say another part was missing. I have asked for my vehicle back and also for £1000 refund, to this they wrote a letter to me saying I could pick it up, but no mention of any money.

please could you help?

I recently issued a cheque that my bank bounced, the bank charged me £39 which is another matter but a company who represents the store who accepted the cheque is pressing me for a £48.50 service fee threatening me with untold gloom if I don't pay up. I should point out that this was a genuine mistake on my part and I don't make a habit of issuing bad cheques in view of the ongoing situation regarding bank charges. Do you think I am being blackmailed into paying money that this company is not legally entitled to? also the cheque cleared the bank the very day I got the first letter claiming this fee??

We recently called in a heating engineer to service our boiler and repair a fault with the system. Within a few days the fault returned so we had to call him back. On his return he seemed annoyed but proceeded to re pressurise the system. Again, within a few days the fault had returned. We called a different plumber in and he eventually sorted out the problem. We paid the original engineer for his first visit but not for his second, as he still had not repaired the fault he was meant to. He is now threatening to had the matter over to debt collectors. Where do we stand on this matter in the eyes of the law? Thank you

I took my car to a mechanic on 18 Sept. He told me it would be ready on 21 Sept. He was doing the work privately at his place of work. As of today 18 Oct I have still not got my car back. He says that he has other problems with the car. He told me that a supplier sent the wrong bit to start with. I told him I needed it back for 26 Sept as I was going on holiday. The holiday cost me an extra £200. What are my rights if any?
