The new president of A1 Technologies feels the company must use the newest and finest equipment in its lab. She has recommended that a 2-year-old piece of precision measurement equipment be replaced immediately. Besides, she feels it can be shown that her proposed equipment is economically advantageous at a 15% rate of return and a planning horizon of 5 years. The following data are given:

Current Proposed

Original Purchase Price $30,000 $40,000

Current Market Value $15,000 ...

Estimated Life 5 years 15 years

Estimated Value $7,000 $10,000

Salvage value after 15 years ... $5,000

Annual operating cost $5,000 $3,000

a) Perform the replacement analysis for a 5-year period.

b) Is the decision the same as in (a) if a 15-year horizon is used for the replacement analysis? What is the inherent assumption of this analysis for the defender which has only another 5 years of usefulness?
