Facts
The notion that spinach contains extraordinary amounts of iron and therefore promotes strength is based on a mistake. This idea was made popular by Popeye the cartoon character, however it's all based on a mistake. The misconception arose in 1870 when a misplaced decimal point in a set of published food tables made spinach appear to contain 10 times as much iron as other vegetables. In fact, it has no unusual amount. Furthermore iron does not seem especially valuable for building muscles, although it is an essential ingredient for red blood cells and thus increases a person's resistance to disease and infection.
