Our next door neighbour owns the field that runs the length of our house at the back. There is a retaining wall that all 7 residents have to pay to maintain even though it only runs at the back of mine and my neighbours house. The top of the wall is approx 3/4 metre wide (flat) and then the field begins. He has erected a post and wire fence approx 30cm from the edge of the wall. My question is this: as he has erected this fence, can we take this as the boundary and can we therefore plant shrubs and flowers on our side of the fence in that 30cm of soil? Has he in erecting the fence 30cm away from the wall in effect lost that tiny strip and can we claim it as ours, or does it still belong to him even though it is now on our side of the fence? I would only wish to plant flowers in it. Further along the fence, we have planted up many shrubs that have been there approx 14-15 years and I wish to know that he cannot make us dig them out or get someone else to as it would require him to come onto our property to do so. What if any are my legal rights if he cuts everything down?

many thanks

C Davies

I am about to be made homeless as my tied accommodation is coming to an end. I am on the housing needs register with two local councils, and I have been told by one of the councils that does not automatically entitle me to move to urgent needs housing, when it clearly states that to be urgent housing, you are a council or housing association tenant who needs to move urgently, for example because your property is about to be demolished or redeveloped.

This is my situation as the local council are about to demolish the flats for new housing. Please help me as I have only eight weeks to look for something else. My e-mail address isjulie.arnold@asp.nhs.uk or alternatively you can call me on 01223 477721

My uncle made a few ironing boards with asbestos pads when he was at school in approximately the 1950's/1960's, several family members were given these including my mother when I was a child. Ours eventually began to wear, sloughing and developing a hole in the pad. Would this have been of any significant risk to health?

I am looking for a bug repellent that works! It also has to be safe for my 2 dogs who spend time both inside the house and in the backyard. I live in Arizona, so this has to repel centipedes, scorpions, silverfish and all varieties of roaches and beetles. Does anyone have a suggestion for a repellent I can use?

My kitchen beaumark stove is approx 18-20 yrs old. I removed the stove door so the oven could get a proper cleaning; however, when it was time to place the door back onto the stove, I couldn't get it snapped in proper. The bottom latch kept falling down and I had to raise it again and try inserting the prongs back into the stove, to no avail. I misplaced the booklet that came with the stove, which does not help.

I have a hillside that is quite steep. It's about 70' long by 12' deep at the ends and 22' deep in the middle. It slopes down in a CONVEX manner to a flat lawn. I tore out some overgrown euonymus and had red clay brought in to reduce the very steep slope. I probably should have had more fill brought in but was trying to keep the cost as low as possible. I have planted 30 small shrubs and 4 large flat rocks on the hillside and bought 50 bales of pine needles to mulch the hillside. We had moderately heavy rains last week and there was a fair amount of fine clay deposited at at the bottom of the hill. Now I'm wondering if I need to put down a landscaping fabric to help stop clay erosion and keep the pine needles from sliding down the slope (which I have not yet put down, by the way). I've priced jute fabric and excelsior blanket (about the same) and wonder which would be best. Also wondering if I chose the right mulch or would some other mulch be better? Have priced bagged mulch here, which would be easier getting up the slope to spread and find cypress mulch to be the cheapest. What do you think of it? How about putting down a thin layer of it and then putting down the pine needles, which I already have over the top of the cypress mulch? If it sounds like I've made a lot of decisions without doing my homework first, that's because I did. Now I'm stuck with the red clay hill and need to do something to keep it in place.

Another question: If I were to plant English ivy on the hill, my wife says this will choke out the shrubs I've planted. Is this true?

Hi

I was wondering if someone could help me.

For the past couple of months we have been experiencing a whistling noise through our water/heating system. It starts at a low pitch and then builds up before going away. It lasts for about 30 secs and usually comes in a batch of 3 cycles spaced at about 6/7 hours apart. We have had people out but typically it never happens whilst they are there. Does anyone have any ideas as to what this might be and how to resolve it? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am trying to "build" a backyard "vanishing stream" I asked before, got no response, It is approx. 50-75 ft in length, starting from an earthen berm approx. 5 ft in height, 8-10 ft across , with a waterfall for a starting point. the width of stream , about 3 ft. I don't know size/volume of pump, diameter of plastic piping to regenerate water. I plan on using a " holding tank " ( like a plastic tank ) buried in the earth at the " vanishing " end. There is not much of a slope in yard. I desire a trickling stream, ( babbeling brooke ) not a rushing stream. Any info on how to construct would be greatly appreciated. I have searched libraries, web sites, everywhere. To add to this I am looking to do this as cheaply as possible. Thank You-Goodday
