I'm a parent/carer of my mentally ill adult son, who suffers from paranoid schizophrenia. He lives independently with support from a social worker, psychiatrist etc. Recently my son was admitted to A&E with tremendous stomach pain, vomiting etc and transferred to a ward where further investigations were made, the investigations confirmed that he had gall stones one of which was causing an obstruction in the neck of the gall bladder. Because of my sons mental illness and his inability to cope with being on a ward full of people and noises he was discharged with a follow up app to see a surgeon.

2 days after my son's release from hospital his social worker visited and my son told her about his recent admittance to hospital and what the outcome was. His social worker basically told my son that it was all in his head, and that he had not got gall stones. This made my son then doubt the medical diagnosis. I am furious! to me my son's social worker is playing with my son's mind and messing it up even more, I don't feel that she had a right to say that to him, she never contacted me to ask if what my son had told her was true before giving my son her opinion. Are social workers trained to give a medical diagnosis should she have done this? this isn't the first time this social worker has implied that my son has made things up or fabricated something about either his medical health or mental health.

Hi. I've been "diagnosed" with schizophrenia back in 03 and have been on ability since. However my psychiatrist did not know what was wrong with me. I have been taking paxil on and off since summer 07. I just started paxil cr for 1 week and a few days now. However I want to get off it and medication altogether. Not only because I don't have health insurance because I don't want to become dependent on it. I don't remember being so down before than this summer. I graduated and moved back home, where my first "episode" started. I've had anxiety like symptoms which could be from starting work and it was stressful. I quit that job and another job. I moved and am looking to start work again. What would you recommend to get off the paxil and medication altogether? I only have 1 week's worth left of the paxil cr and a little less than a month's worth of generic paxil. This summer's been the worst for me. I feel so different than I was a year ago back at school. I want to live happily.
