Consider this: An unforeseen opportunity arises in which significant economic benefit or intense physical gratification would derive from some disreputable act on your part. What would be the hierarchy of restraints that would (one hopes) compel resistance to the temptation? So, taking this at face value, all other things being equal, select whatever clauses would apply in your own weighing of pros and cons (however brief or spontaneous your deliberation may be), and list them in descending order of importance i.e. key consideration first.

You may include reasons for your choices, but keep it brief and no bible quotations please.

You would choose not avail yourself of the opportunity because:

1. It offends your inherent personal credo irrespective of religious, legal and all other moral considerations.

2. It contravenes the law of the land.

3. It contravenes certain clear and unequivocal teachings of the bible, or of your particular religion.

4. Society will highly disapprove of it if they find out, irrespective of religious and legal factors, in which case you would forfeit the good opinion of family, friends, relatives, co-workers and neighbours and perhaps even become a social pariah.

5. There is a chance you will go to gaol for it.

6. There is a chance it will cost you your job.

For me, the homespun philosophy and turn of phrase of certain friends, family, workmates, etc. over time builds to a treasured collection. They range from the profound to the ridiculous. Please share some gems which have struck a particular chord with you, or have simply amused you – the Homer Simpson kind to the to Marshall McLuhan kind.

A random dip into my own rag-bag found these: 'It's my view that whenever you get a gaggle of women together in a room, no good can come of it – I've long held that opinion.' (Ed Smith) and 'Quandary – a four-sided situation assailed by difficulty' (Peter Grimshaw) and 'What are you, a man or a mouse - squeak up!' (Tony Cooper).

It seems to me that in describing animals we tend to talk about their benefits like we were going to buy an appliance.

I had a neighbor ask me about a type of snake that may be in her backyard. She was weighing whether to kill it or let it live based on its function. It was not poisonous. Her thought was that if it had a low value purpose, she would kill it and be rid of the thing. But if it did "intended" as a rodent control device, she would turn her attentions elsewhere.

Is this the result of Darwinism? Everything changes to a niche so it has a purpose, rather than it is valuable to itself so it adapted to continue to live because it has a strong self-preservation instinct.

Is this a Religious idea? God created man and everything else was to benefit man. If there is no benefit, man is free to sort out as he sees fit?

Is this a consumerism characteristic? We pick what we want from the best that there is offered. We shun any product that is not our brand or is of subquality.
