My dog has green mucus coming out of his eyes. What is it?

Discuss this question

Question found in Dogs In General
Depending on how long the discharge has been occurring, it may be a bacterial infection. Eye and nasal discharge are also symptoms of canine distemper. It is best to take your dog to the vet to be checked out, especially if there has been fever, diarrhea, cough and runny nose. A dog may have any or all of these symptoms. Usually in these cases, a fever is present but goes along unnoticed. Either way, an eye infection can get nasty if untreated, so it is best to take him to the vet for treatment.
Distemper is contagious, if you are unsure at this point it is best to quarantine him from the other dogs in the house.

Comments :
I took him to the vet and they gave me predisone to give my dog as needed. Or I could get Benedryl. Do you thik this is the right medication/diagnos? He seems fine. The mucus is very minor. They took his temperature and it was fine.
Thank you for your help.

I have a Victorian bulldog with a skin rash on the side of his face, how can I treat this?

Discuss this question

Question found in Dogs In General
You really need to take the dog to the vet to determine the cause of the rash. It could be simple allergies to something or it could be something else, such as a parasite or even something more serious. If it is an allergy, the vet will likely give you a creme to treat it.
Never use people medicine on a pet unless the vet tells you it is ok. Somethings that are perfectly fine for us can be fatal or life threatening to a pet.
Good luck

I beleive large clouds can weigh many hundreds of tons, so why does gravity not pull them to earth?

Discuss this question

Question found in Science In General

The two biggest reasons that clouds stay in the sky are
1) small drops
2) wind/updrafts
A cloud is made up of very small drops of water. Small drops of water fall more slowly than big drops, due to air resistance. The updrafts of wind are stronger than the force of gravity against them thereby keeping them up in the air.
As drops fall through the air, the air pushes back on them. Small drops have less mass and more surface area than large drops and thus are affected by the winds more than items that are more dense.
If you think of a balloon filled with air (not helium but just normal air) the balloon with air will actually weigh more than a similar balloon with no air, but because of the larger surface area, winds (your breath for example) can keep the balloon in the air. The balloon with no air drops readily to the ground.
Hope this makes sense.

Hello, my cat has been refusing to eat now for a month and we are force feeding her with a syringe. Sometimes she keeps it down but most of the time she brings it all back up again with white foam. She has been to the vets and they don't seem to know what is wrong with her. She is an elderly cat and we don't want to give up on her. It's like she wants to eat but she can't. Have you any advice on what to do now and how we can help? Thank-you

Question found in Cats
First, take her to another (unrelated) vet to get second opinion. Cats are pretty fragile creatures, especially as they get older.
Kidney disease and thyroid issues top the typical ailments of felines.
Take her to another vet and have some blood tests done. Included in these tests should be the full blood panel that would show kidney, liver and pancreatic functions. The CBC (Complete Blood Count) should also be done to look for anemia, haemo-concentration (blood being too thick - dehydration) or blood parasites (FIA).
If none of this pans out, there are veterinary specialists in many different disciplines just like humans. They can get VERY expensive VERY quickly.

As a humane thought, are you keeping this girl going for your sake or hers? Sometimes, we just can't say goodbye when we should. If you can't find a diagnosis and treatment that fits/works, then some further consideration might be in order.
Good luck

My 14 year old female cat has been removing hair from her tummy and legs for the last three summers, and it grows back in the winter. She is not stressed and the spray from the vet for stress was ineffective. She is now demanding food regularly and is not gaining weight - there must be other reasons other than stress. Her skin appears to irritate her suddenly - all the time.

Discuss this question

Question found in Cats
One consideration I would have is a hyperactive thyroid. A hyperactive thyroid is fairly common in older cats (8+ yrs). The thyroid condition can certainly cause "wasting" or thinning out because the metabolism is running higher than normal. Some simple thyroid checks at the vet can help rule this out.
Treatment can range from a simple pill from one to two times a day to being as radical as having the thyroid removed. Thyroid conditions are also know to cause skin irritations and hair loss.
The only stress that I would imagine affecting her is her being uncomfortable.
As with any medial professional, if you don't find answers that make sense, get a second opinion. No doctor knows everything. (They might beg to differ of course...)
Good luck

How do I convert my audio cassette tapes to CDs or iPod?

Discuss this question

Question found in Electronics and Gadgets In General
A fairly simple way is getting a double-male earphone plug and plugging one end into the tape player earphone jack and the other into the computer microphone/input jack. You will need a program that can record input to the computer. These will typically record in .wav format. These can be converted to .mp3, .mp4 or other formats. Sometimes the program (fruity loops, Roxio, Nero, etc) can convert the input to mp3 in one process. At this point the program (Roxio, Nero) can write the files to a playable CD (CDA format) or you can just copy the files onto the ipod. I would suggest recording one song at a time to make media management simpler.

Check your local laws regarding copyright issues and let your laws and conscience be your guide.

There are more complex methods involving more expensive sound cards or equipment that would result in better potential sound quality. These kits can be bought at many computer/electronics shops.

Are there any events associated with Jesus that bear historical scrutiny and can be independantly verified without reference to Biblical text or 'Word of God'?

Discuss this question

Question found in Theology
Many Christians will not like where this will go, but oh well let the death threats begin.
The name "Jesus" is a bastardization of the word Yeshua which means Salvation or Savior. "Christ" is NOT Jesus' sir name. It means "The Anointed One" in the same respect that Buddha means "The Awakened One" Both words and definitions would allow for more than one "Christ or Buddha". The Buddhists believe that once you reach enlightenment, you are Buddha.

The name Jesus did not appear until about 1100-1150 AD when the Church of England changed it from Yeshua to Jesus. Some scholars believe that the name was changed because Yeshua sounded too Jewish. Imagine that, a Jewish guy with a Jewish name...

The ONLY original aspect of Christianity is Jesus. There are TREMENDOUS parallels between Christ and the Egyptian god Horus. Especially the Sermon on the mount, fighting Satan, 12 apostles, virgin birth, son of God etc.
The 10 commandments seem to be taken from the 42 Egyptian
commandments
.
There were about 50 different gospels used in different sects in the early days of the "Jesus Movement". Only 5 of these survive (including the latest discovery of the Judas Gospel). These might be considered historical references as they are really the only thing we have other than what might be contained in the Vatican library that is not open to the public. The only item of historical proof might be legal notes in reference to his trial and sentence. I have yet to hear of their date proven existence.

It took OVER 1500 years for the accepted books of the Bible to be Canonized (accepted as "Word of God") there was considerable infighting and political maneuvering before today's version was agreed upon.
Here is the text from one of my earlier answers on a similar subject.

History of the Bible: (veracity of this is in question... always get many sources)

Even the name of Jesus is either a mistranslation or creation from the original
Yeshua (meaning salvation) The Church of England was credited with changing the name circa 1100-1200 AD depending on source materials for no real known reason - some scholars surmise the name Yeshua sounded too jewish...

51-125 AD
The New Testament books are written.
140 AD
Marcion, a businessman in Rome, taught that there were two Gods: Yahweh, the cruel God of the Old Testament, and Abba, the kind father of the New Testament. Marcion eliminated the Old Testament as scriptures and, since he was anti-Semitic, kept from the New Testament only 10 letters of Paul and
2/3 of Luke's gospel (he deleted references to Jesus's Jewishness). Marcion's "New Testament", the first to be compiled, forced the mainstream Church to decide on a core canon: the four Gospels and Letters of Paul.
200 AD
The periphery of the canon is not yet determined. According to one list, compiled at Rome c. AD 200 (the Muratorian Canon), the NT consists of the 4 gospels; Acts; 13 letters of Paul (Hebrews is not included); 3 of the 7 General Epistles (1-2 John and Jude); and also the Apocalypse of Peter.
367 AD
The earliest extant list of the books of the NT, in exactly the number and order in which we presently have them, is written by Athanasius, Bishop of Alexandria, in his Festal letter # 39 of 367 A.D.
382 AD
Council of Rome (whereby Pope Damasus started the ball rolling for the defining of a universal canon for all city-churches). Listed the New Testament books in their present number and order.
393 AD
The Council of Hippo, which began "arguing it out." Canon proposed by Bishop Athanasius.
397 AD
The Council of Carthage, which refined the canon for the Western Church, sending it back to Pope Innocent for ratification. In the East, the canonical process was hampered by a number of schisms (esp. within the Church of Antioch). However, this changed by ... The Ecumenical Council of Nicaea II
787 AD
The Ecumenical Council of Nicaea II, which adopted the canon of Carthage. At this point, both the Latin West and the Greek / Byzantine East had the same canon. However, ... The non-Greek, Monophysite and Nestorian Churches of the East (the Copts, the Ethiopians, the Syrians, the Armenians, the Syro-Malankars, the Chaldeans, and the Malabars) were still left out. But these Churches came together in agreement, in 1442A.D., in Florence.
1442 AD :
At the Council of Florence, the entire Church recognized the 27 books. This council confirmed the Roman Catholic Canon of the Bible which Pope Damasus I had published a thousand years earlier. So, by 1439, all orthodox branches of the Church were legally bound to the same canon. This is 100 years before the Reformation.
1536 AD
In his translation of the Bible from Greek into German, Luther removed 4 N.T. books (Hebrews, James, Jude, and Revelation) and placed them in an appendix saying they were less than canonical.
1546
At the Council of Trent, the Catholic Church reaffirmed once and for all the full list of 27 books. The council also confirmed the inclusion of the Deuterocanonical books which had been a part of the Bible canon since the early Church and was confirmed at the councils of 393 AD, 373, 787 and 1442 AD. At Trent Rome actually dogmatized the canon, making it more than a matter of canon law, which had been the case up to that point, closing it for good.

I have a 16 year old cat who weighed 12 lbs two years ago, but is now down to 8.7 lbs. She eats, drinks and acts normal. Her body functions have not changed. Is it normal for older animals to lose weight as they age? If not what can I do to help her put some weight back on?

Discuss this question

Question found in Cats
Take her to the vet and have her blood and thyroid checked. As cats and dogs age, the thyroid can get a little off-kilter, so to speak. Cats, especially 8 years and older, can develop hyperthyroidism which ramps up the metabolism and can cause weight loss but otherwise normal appearance. Treatment is usually just a pill or two. In radical cases, the thyroid is removed.

Dogs tend to go the other way and tend towards hypothyroidism, which causes them to slow down, gain weight and get a dull coat of fur. Again, treatment is usually a daily pill or two.

An archetype is a general model of a person, object, or idea from which other similar instances are copied, derived or emulated.
In psychology, (especially Jungian) an archetype is a model of a person, personality, or behavior.
The word "model" basically refers to an easily definable and constant example.
