What is the big bang theory?

Discuss this question

Question found in Physics
The Big Bang theory is a proposed theory of how the Universe came to be. It was first proposed in 1927 by a Belgian priest by the name of Georges Lemaitre. Or, more accurately, Lemaitre suggested that our Universe was created with the explosion of a primeval atom. Primeval means something that existed in the beginning of it all. So, basically, the theory suggests that everything that is now came from something of the atomic size that massively exploded, hence the "Big Bang".

According to the Big Bang theory, fifteen billion years ago the aforementioned primeval atom exploded and started the expansion of the Universe, and the Universe has been expanding ever since and still continues to do so.

The person that actually more so developed Lemaitre's theory was a scientist by the name of Edwin Hubble (I'm sure you've heard of the Hubble telescope named after him). He first proposed that the Universe is always expanding, and expanding in every direction. He said that galaxies (such as the one we live in) are always moving apart from each other (this is known as the red shift).

What is LDAP?

Discuss this question

Question found in Internet In General
LDAP stands for Lightweight Directory Access Protocol. It's basically a protocol used by e-mail programs to access information from a server. What does this mean? LDAP indexes the information on a server for quick retrieval. Most e-mail programs (Microsoft Outlook for one) support the LDAP protocol. LDAP isn't solely used for e-mail, however, it can be used for other server tasks (encryption certificates for example). I hope I answered your question in a satisfactory manner.

A bat and ball cost £1.10. The bat cost £1.00 more than the ball. How much did the ball cost ?

Discuss this question

Question found in Fun Trivia
The ball cost £0.05.

The initial assumption here is that the ball is £0.10 because you assume that the bat costs £1.00 plus the ball which would be £0.10 so it equals £1.10. However, the bat must cost £1.00 more than the ball. By assuming this, if the ball costs £0.10, then the bat is £1.10 itself, and £1.10 + £0.10 equals £1.20, which is £0.10 more than the bat and ball is supposed to cost.

How can you prove that 7 is half of 12 ?

Discuss this question

Question found in Fun Trivia
A puzzle that requires you to know your Roman Numerals.

In Roman Numerals, twelve would be XII (X stands for 10 and each I represents 1, so 10+1+1 = 12).

Now, imagine cutting it in half horizontally at the center of the X and across. What do you get?

VII.

The top half of an X is V shaped, and cutting two I's in half doesn't change their structure. In Roman Numerals, seven is VII.

So half of 12 (XII) can technically be 7 (VII).

What is the difference between DVD-R and DVD+R?

Discuss this question

Question found in Electronics and Gadgets In General
DVD-R's are compatible with approximately 90% of DVD players and DVD-ROM's. DVD-R's can store 4.37 GB (gigabytes) of data on a single-sided, one-layered disc (meaning that only one side of the disc is used). A two sided disc can store 8.75 GB of data. DVD-R is non-rewritable. This means that you cannot erase the data on the disc and rewrite new data on it. DVD-RW's are rewritable.

DVD+R's are compatible with approximately 85% of DVD players and DVD ROM's. This basically means that DVD+R's don't work with as many DVD players as DVD-R's do. DVD+R's store the same amount of data (4.37 GB one-sided, 8.75 GB double-sided).

So the main difference is compatibility.

However, DVD+R's run faster usually. Usually, if you're sure a DVD+R disc is compatible with your DVD player, I would go with it.

What if the sun explodes?

Discuss this question

Question found in Space & Astronomy
In theory, we wouldn't know for roughly eight minutes. Why?

Although it is only a theory, Einstein set forth the concept that nothing travels faster than the speed of light. In any event, if this is true, gravity cannot travel faster than the speed of light (which is 299,792,458 meters per second in a vacuum). It takes approximately eight minutes for the light from the sun to reach us here on Earth. So, theoretically, it would take eight minutes for the shift in gravity to reach us, so we could continue orbiting as normal for eight minutes before the planet Earth is suddenly flung into space in a straight line (because of the absence of gravity holding it in orbit). The speed would be so momentous we would die instantly.

However, all of this is based on the premise that our sun explodes. Our sun is not the type of star that explodes. I would rather worry about it imploding.
