Why has a fifty pence piece got seven sides?

I believe its shape help its to roll freely and its special sides and diameter help it to get measured correctly in slot machines, also blind people can feel by the seven sides what coin they are holding as also with the twenty pence piece..it was issued in oct 1969 to replace the ten shilling note......from jane
